Barron River
Updated: 11-Jul-2013The Barron River Gorge is located 20 minutes' drive north of Cairns and lies along a traditional pathway used by the original indigenous Djabugay people. The spectacular Barron Falls, further upstream, are considered a sacred site. The famous Kuranda Railway and Skyrail Cableway also traverse sections of the gorge.
'Raging Thunder' and 'Foaming Fury' offer adrenalin fuelled half day afternoon rafting trips on the Barron River through the Barron Gorge National Park. In the calmer sections you will get to enjoy the beauty of the worlds oldest Heritage Listed Rainforest and waterfalls from a unique waterline perspective. The Barron River has grade 3 rapids which means they are perfect for first time rafters and children. The rafting finishes at Lake Placid.
There is a rainforest suburb called 'Rainforest Estate' very close to the Barron River.
A popular walking trail starts at Douglas Track Road in Rainforest estate and heads up to Glacier Rock.
