Harrys Bommie:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 4
DEPTH: Maximum 16 metres
DIVE TYPE: Garden Reef dive
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 10 - 30 metres, Average 15m

A stunning garden reef scattered around the pinnacles and patch reefs of Agincourt 4.  A favourite amongst Dive Instructors and a site regularly visited by juvenile Grey Reef Whalers and occasionally Manta Rays.

Divers have two options here for diving, the first is to dive the coral gardens on the northern side of the reef protected from the prevailing south easterly winds where you will find colorful branching stag horn and plate corals, rainbow colored reef fish of small and medium size and in the current zones mackerel and large numbers of Fusiliers.

The second dive is to circumnavigate the patch reef which can be completed in forty to fifty minutes comfortably allowing plenty of time for the underwater photographer to take many photographs of the coral gardens, reef fish and hopefully of Grey Reef Whaler sharks.

Three Sisters:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 4
DEPTH: Maximum 20 metres
DIVE TYPE: Garden Reef dive
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 10 - 30 metres, Average 15m
LOOK FOR: Anemones and their resident Clown fish.

This site was named due to the presence of 3 deep water pinnacles located on the sheltered side of a patch reef located along the inner edge of Agincourt reef # 4.  Visibility here is rarely less than good.  Grey reef sharks are almost always seen as divers enter the water.  Divers have several options at this site:

Option 1:  Is a deeper dive that focuses on the pinnacles. Here the divers are able to explore several narrow canyons that exist between the Sisters where several medium to large Cod, Coral Trout, Red Bass and Sweetlips may be found. Queensland Grouper have been seen in this area.

Located away from the reef edge the Sisters are exposed to light but steady currents that attract swarms of Anthias, that we consider, are some of the reefs most colourful fish, along with dense schools of Fusiliers. This current also sees many Feather Starfish and other colourful filter feeders such as the red, white and blue Sea Apple, a type of sessile sea cucumbers.  A number of Sea Anemones and their resident Clown fish can also be found. Grey reef sharks are commonly observed throughout the dive.

Option 2: Is a shallow dive through the coral gardens of the sheltered side of the patch reef. The coral community here consists of a complex community of colourful branching, shrub, and plate corals and includes several large boulder corals, 300yrs plus in age. Several Giant clams approaching their maximum size can be found in this area. The fish community here is dominated by colourful reef fish species of small and medium sizes. Excellent site to find a diverse range of Butterfly fish, colorful Wrasse and Parrot fish species. Anemones and their resident Clown fish are a feature of this area. This is also a fantastic snorkeling environment with access to the extreme shallows of the reef flat. Here snorkellers can find themselves within an arms length of mature giant clams.

The Chapel:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 4
DEPTH: Maximum 20 metres
DIVE TYPE: Wall dive
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 10 - 30 metres, Average 15m
LOOK FOR: Large Pelagics - Trevally, Mackeral

The Chapel is a perfect place to be when the northerly winds blow.  The site got its name from the fact that a wedding took place here some years ago. This site features a vibrant coral community with a wide diversity of colourful corals seen throughout this relaxed wall dive.

Grey reef sharks are almost always seen behind the vessel as we arrive and will welcome the divers as they enter the water. Larger pelagic fish such as Trevally, Mackeral and Tuna can also be spotted out deeper waiting to feed. A large colony of Clownfish live in their anemone on top of a huge, ancient boulder coral.  The reef flat puts you within touching distance of the smaller reef fish and you are likely to encounter and hear Parrot Fish munching on the coral as they feed on the algae.

Snorkellers will also see the grey Reef Sharks as they make their way along the edge of the reef flat where it plunges down the steep wall.

The Point:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 4
DEPTH: Maximum 25 metres
DIVE TYPE: Multi
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 15-30 metres, Average 20m
LOOK FOR: Red Bass, Giant Clams, Great Visibility

The Point is a transition zone between two very different reef environments.  Here divers enter the water in a protected lagoon environment with colourful coral gardens before making their way around the point to drift along a deep water wall bordering the channel that exists between Agincourt reef #4 and Agincourt reef #3. Visibility here is generally good to great.

This is a great big fish dive with schools of Red Bass, Big eye Trevally and Silver Drummer. A school of Barracuda is often seen a little further around the Point as one makes their way along the wall. Both Grey and White Tip Reef Sharks can be seen further along the wall.  Throughout the dive large schools of Unicorn fish, Anthias and Fusiliers are encountered. Sandy patches host several large Sea Cucumber species with the GBR’s largest species, the Pineapple Sea Cucumber one of the most common.

For the non diver the sheltered lagoon area is a favorite snorkeling area where non divers can get up close and personal with large Sweetlips, Maori Wrasse and Giant clams. Almost every species of Parrot fish found on the GBR can be seen in this area.  The coral gardens here and on the adjacent reef flat are diverse and colourful. More adventurous snorkellers who make there way around the point have the opportunity to see all that the divers experience all be it from some distance above.

Garys Gut:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 4
DEPTH: Maximum 40 metres
DIVE TYPE: Deep
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 12 - 40 metres, Average 20m
LOOK FOR: Unicorn Fish, Unique Butterfly Fish, Xenias

A favourite dive site for a lot of Quicksilver’s repeat divers, a stunning wall plunging from 5m to 40m on the outer edge of Agincourt No 4, this is good bye Australia. Unfortunately this site can not be dived all year-round due to its exposed location; the best times are during Australian spring and summer (September to March).

There are multiple dive options from drift to the North and South along the wall, deep and static dives, when you swim out from the wall and look back at it you get a sense of the immense size of the reef structure.

As you drift along there are deep gutters into the reef wall, which are home to large numbers of Unicorn and Parrotfish and Pyramid Butterfly fish also medium to large Cod, Coral Trout, Red Bass and lone Maori Wrasse.  You will also see White and Black Tip Reef Sharks and large Spanish Mackeral working the current. There have been occasional sightings of Hammerhead Sharks.

In the shallower waters there are colourful soft coral gardens and in the deeper waters large fan corals.

The Gap:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 3
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 12 metres
DIVE TYPE: Drift dive
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 12 - 25 metres, average 15m
LOOK FOR: Fantastic reef wall, schools of Sweetlip

The Gap is an unusual site due to its location. A sandy lagoon like gutter with good visibility, it is separated from the very outer edge of Agincourt Reef 3 by a long thin tongue of reef flat. Despite its shallow and sheltered nature its proximity to the reef outer edge sees this site occupied by both the small and the large. From the large school of Golden goatfish that provide a brilliant contrast over the electric blue Staghorn coral that the call home to rare encounters with the giant Queensland grouper this site has the potential to show you it all.

A relatively small area of interest hosts an amazing diversity of reef fish and coral species. One moment you can be face to face with a delicate Butterflyfish or brilliantly coloured Angelfish while the next its up close and personal with large Oceanic Coral Trout or a school of Goldmans Sweetlips.

A drift dive along a shallow reef wall will take you to a number of sheltered grottos where Parrotfish and Surgeonfish make their living and sea cucumbers scour the sandy floor. 300-400 year old Boulder corals and large beds of Staghorn coral are a feature of this area.

This is where snorkellers and divers can share the same experience seeing everything the other sees. A favourite site for introductory divers providing that big fish experience.

Turtle Bommie:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 3
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 18 To 20 metres
DIVE TYPE: Drift dive
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 12 - 30 metres, average 18m - 20m
LOOK FOR: Fantastic reef wall, schools of Sweetlip

This reef can only be visited in the right conditions as it is weather prone. It is one of the Dive Instructors favorite dive sites, it needs good navigational skill by the dive tender master to find, but on calm days it is easy to see well before you get there by the large number of fish swimming close to the surface, the reason for the large numbers of fish is its isolation from other reefs.

The visibility at this site is normally 12 to 30m with an average of 18 to 20m, when diving from your deepest point looking up the edge of the reef on the current side you will see large schools of Fusiliers, Drummers, Sweetlip and on the reef walls Trout, Moorish Idols and numerous Clown Fish. On the reef top there are large plate corals which can provide shelter for sleeping Green Turtles.

Two Rocks:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 3
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 20 metres
DIVE TYPE: TBA
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 10 - 20 metres, Average 15m
LOOK FOR: Regular Turtle Encounters

Two Rocks is a well sheltered site with great variety. Abundant schools of parrotfish around the bommie, with large numbers of planktonic feeders at the front wall. Coral cover is second to none and turtles are regularly encountered.

Marine Life: Parrotfish, Fusiliers, Chromids, Trout, Butterflyfish, White Tip Reef Sharks and various Pelagics.

The reef edge itself creates a wonderful experience for novice divers and snorkellers. Huge ancient Boulder corals of Green, Blue and Yellow shelter bays with pretty coral gardens only a short swim from the pinnacle itself.

Wreck:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 3
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 22 metres
DIVE TYPE: Wreck dive
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 12 - 40 metres, average 20m
LOOK FOR: Smiley the Shark

This site is a large sandy bay varying in depth from 22m to 12m, the southern side of the bay has imposing pinnacles and colourful coral gardens. Some seventy years ago a Taiwanese fishing boat ran aground in the bay and was wrecked, the engine block, gen set, cooling pipes, plate and a large fluted ship anchor remain.

Divers at this site can do drift dives with an incoming tide from the outer edge of the reef into the bay or static dives from two different moorings. The visibility at this site is generally good from 15m to 20m with the incoming tide.

The coral community consists of colourful branching, shrub and plate corals and large boulder corals and sandy areas. The fish life is numerous from large number of Sweetlip, Fusiliers,Clown Fish and Anemone fish. Also seen on numerous occasions are Green Turtles and the occasional Grey Reef Whaler Sharks. On most dives divers will see a large White Tip Reef Shark known to the Quicksilver dive crew as Smiley.

Phils Reef:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 3 (Outer)
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 16 metres
DIVE TYPE: TBA
SKILL: Novice - Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 10 - 25 metres, average 15m
LOOK FOR: Stunning Patch Reef, Giant Clams, Groper

Stunning patch reef with a spectacular array of corals, huge plates providing perfect ambush grounds for a variety of Groper.

A patch reef behind Agincourt No 3 with a spectacular array of corals, large plate coral and boulder coral formations ideal hunting grounds for Coral Trout and home for large numbers of Damselfish. On the edge of the reef numerous caves are home for large Brown Sweetlips. There are also several Giant Clams.

For the underwater photographer this reef always has a number of Cuttlefish which in most cases do not move when you come close to them which enables you to take photographs showing the colour changes pulsing through its body.

Diving can be static or drift depending on tidal movement at maximum depth of 18m, the best diving at this site is from 12m to the surface, it is also possible to see at this site on occasions Green Turtles and White and Blacktip Reef Sharks

The Gardens:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 2
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 10 metres
DIVE TYPE: Shallow lagoon + Drift dive
SKILL: Novice - Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 12 - 30 metres, average 20m
LOOK FOR: Drift dive, mass of boulder corals

Shallow lagoon site with a mass of boulder corals scattered over the bottom. We often drift this site allowing us to see a large area of reef. The current also means the visibility is often exceptional.

Protected from waves from almost all directions The Gardens are located in the back reef lagoon of the northern end of Agincourt Reef 2b. The sheltered nature of this site produces one of the most diverse and colourful coral gardens to be found within the Agincourt reefs. Large and ancient Boulder corals are scattered throughout this site where ridges covered in a colourful array of plate, shrub and soft corals reach out from the inner reef edge. The plate coral communities here are some of the most magnificent we have seen.

A shallow dive, the current here runs along the reef edge providing great visibility and the ability to cover a large area in a single dive. The excellent visibility and colourful coral gardens make for great wide-angle photographic opportunities.

Colourful Parrotfish graze the shallows. Butterflyfish and gaudy Wrasse make their living amongst the coral gardens, while Goatfish and Sweetlips forage in the sand and rubble in between. During summer this is a popular nesting and display area for Triggerfish. These guys can certainly add some spice to a dive. The abundance of baitfish means there is always a chance of encountering large pelagic fish or Reef Sharks. Giant Maori Wrasse call The Gardens home.

One of the best snorkelling sites we have, The Gardens provides the snorkeller with a true sense of wilderness and adventure. From the reef flat to the edge of the back reef sand cliff this site is at once, amazing, beautiful and stunning.

Barracuda Bommie:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 2
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 22 metres
DIVE TYPE: Pinnacle dive
SKILL: Novice to Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 12 - 30 metres, average 20m
LOOK FOR: Fantastic pinnacle, schools of Barracuda

A deep water pinnacle situated close to the mid point of the sheltered side of this small ribbon reef is one of our most popular sites. Visibility is almost always fantastic since you are literally visiting the very edge of the GBR, next stop Fiji!

For the divers the pinnacle holds not only the obvious school of Barracuda but also Dog Tooth Tuna and some fair size Grey reef Sharks. The pinnacle is a macro Photographers delight.  Here a huge diversity of some the reefs most colourful animals, the Nudibranch, are to be found by those with a keen eye. Feather starfish almost carpet the Pinnacles top.

Look closely at these and you might find the tiny Squat Lobster that lives within the Feather Starfishes waving arms. Christmas Tree worms, tiny colourful Sponges, Hawk fish and Coral shrimps will keep the photographer busy.  The reef edge itself creates a wonderful experience for novice divers and snorkelers. Huge ancient Boulder corals of Green, Blue and Yellow shelter bays with pretty coral gardens only a short swim from the pinnacle itself.

Here, if you look carefully, you will find all of the colourful coral fish species you could think to name, and probably many that you couldn’t.

Horse Shoe:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 2
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 20 metres
DIVE TYPE: Drift dive
SKILL: Novice - Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 12 - 30 metres, average 20m
LOOK FOR: Humphead Parrotfish, Goldmans Sweetlips

This is a patch reef situated between Agincourt No 2 & 3 in an area of strong tidal movement, it offers both drift and static dives.

The drift dives are along the northern edge with depths to 20m, the coral community due to the high tidal movement is exceptionally good with large areas of plate and branching coral.

Near the mooring you will find several large clams. Subject to tidal movement large numbers of Red Bass, Goldman’s Sweetlips and Bigeye Trevally can be seen on either side of the reef, in the shallow water over the reef top Humphead Parrotfish can be seen individually or in groups of up to thirty.

On the sandy bottom there are areas of Garden Eel’s and on occasions Green Turtles and Yellow Tailed Fusiliers accompany you on your dive.

Turtle Bay:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 2 (Outer)
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 22 metres
DIVE TYPE: TBA
SKILL: Novice - Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 10 - 30 metres, average 20m
LOOK FOR: Large Loggerhead Turtle, Reef wall

Located on the sheltered northern corner of Agincourt Reef.  Turtle Bay is so named due to the seasonal presence of large Logger Head turtles during late October, November and early December. Visibility is rarely less than good; this is a great deep dive option.

This is a transition zone where divers begin their dive in a sheltered coral garden on the edge of the lagoon before rounding the reef corner to drift along a steep wall environment maintaining a diverse community of Corals, Sea Whips, Sea Fans and Feather Stars.

Giant clams are abundant here as are the Steep Head Parrotfish, the most colourful of the family. Throughout the dive large schools of Yellow Tail Fusiliers are common. The deep drop off increases the chance of encounters with Grey reef Sharks.

During the spring (September, October and November) the reef wall is a spawning site for a wide range of reef fish species. Though some luck is required, at this time of the year, around the new moons, huge mixed species schools of Surgeon fish, Wrasse, Parrotfish and Damsel fish crowd the reef crest in a mass spawning orgy.

The lagoon and reef flat provide excellent snorkelling and diving for the non-diver or novice. In this area a large colony of the Orange finned Anemone fish can be found along with a great diversity of colourful coral fish.

Sandy patches host several species of Sea cucumbers including the Pineapple sea cucumber which at a maximum size of 60cm is the Great Barrier Reefs largest. Just of the reef edge a huge Rice Bubble coral (Pavona minuta) of 500-600 years of age can be seen, a sentinel to the ages.

West End:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 2 (Outer)
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 15 metres
DIVE TYPE: Swim through caves
SKILL: Novice - Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 08 - 25 metres, average 15m
LOOK FOR: Maori Wrasse, swim through caves

West End is a pure wall dive around the southwestern corner and reef front of Agincourt reef.

Beginning the dive in a shallow coral garden where divers may encounter large Maori Wrasse, giants that dwarf the average coral fish, divers then make their way along a steep wall that falls to 25m.  Along the wall a number of swim through caves can be found.

Exposed to the seasonal southeasterly trade winds the coral community of the wall is tough and gnarled. Steady currents provide excellent visibility and a perfect home for schooling plankton feeding fish such as Anthias, Fusiliers and Damselfish. These in turn attract the predatory Oceanic Coral Trout and Red Bass. Both White-tip Reef Sharks and Grey reef Sharks can be encountered here.

Closer to the surface the reef crest is home to a diverse species group of Parrotfish, Wrasse and Surgeonfish.

The coral gardens close to the vessel mooring provide excellent snorkelling with a fantastic species diversity of Parrotfish and Butterfly fish to be found.

The reef flat is home to several giant clams. While those with a keen eye will be able to find a number of species of Anemone fish including the Pink and Orange Finned species.

Nursery Bommie:
LOCATION: Agincourt Reef 2
DEPTH: Maximum Depth 24 metres
DIVE TYPE: Pinnacle dive
SKILL: Novice - Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 12 - 30 metres, average 20m

One of the most spectacular dive sites on the Agincourt Reef system, the pinnacle is in a depth of 25m to 16m mid point behind a small ribbon reef.

In the sandy areas surrounding the pinnacle Blue Spotted Lagoon Rays and Garden Eels can be seen. Close to the pinnacle you will see schools of Drummer, several types of Surgeonfish, Unicornfish and pairs of Foxface Rabbitfish.

On the pinnacle numerous Clown and Pink Anemone fish and occasional Moray Eels, close to the top Feather Star of various colours with their arms waving in the current.

At the end of the dive you make your way to the shallower reef waters behind the ribbon reef for your safety stop where you will see small boulder coral and large areas of staghorn coral.

SKILL: Novice - Intermediate
VISIBILITY: 08 - 35 metres, average 15m
LOOK FOR: Large marine life

Visibility here is extremely good and Castle rock provides for superb deep and shallow dives. Circumnavigating the pinnacle the divers are likely to see White-Tip Reef sharks resting on the sandy ocean floor.

Almost every dive, you are met by "Axle" a 1.2m Malabar Cod, he is very friendly and will interact with divers, following them for the majority of the dive, he may even swim up to you looking to be patted. Curious Triggerfish will also swim close to have a better look at the divers. During the dive an abundance of Blue Lined Yellow Snappers and Sergeant Major Damsel fish will escort the group.
